When Google updates his algorithms, I always found my website not ranking very well. It went from 5th position to 204 position in SERP. I hate Google algorithm updates.

You are talking about WP blog, It's good idea to have a header ad and on post ad, but the most important is to have the sidebar on the right not the left.
